The SUNSET BOULEVARD Short List

According to a British newspaper, a trifecta of Hollywood leading ladies are at the top of Andrew Lloyd Webber's wish list for the on-again movie version of his long running musical.

How does this sound when it comes to a pair of contemporary actors reprising the roles made famous by William Holden and Gloria Swanson in Billy Wilder's 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard: Ewan McGregor as Joe Gillis and Barbra Streisand as Norma Desmond? Or how about Hugh Jackman as Joe and Meryl Streep as his semi-unwelcome sugar mommy?

According to a report today in The Daily Telegraph, those are very real possibilities now that the film project is to a certain extent back on and the names of Streisand, Streep and original Broadway show star Glenn Close are atop Lloyd-Weber's personal wish list.

Christopher Hampton, co-writer of the Broadway show music and lyrics book and that of any upcoming Paramount Pictures movie version, says Streep's name only just came up recently as a possibility. And while Close is said to be Hampton's personal choice and the previous frontrunner for the movie role, Streep has immediate traction by virtue of her prodigious talents and the fact that she personally attended a workshop version of the play at the playwright's home.

Streisand should no entirely be counted out either, as she once recorded two of the musical score's songs for a special compilation album and is now back in the pop culture flow thanks to her successful recent concert tour. Still, all in all, Streep gets our vote. The idea of what the twice victorious and fourteen-times Oscar nominated 58-year-old actress could do with the iconic Desmond platform is simply too tantalizing to not make happen.

Sunset Boulevard, the musical movie version, has long been on the Hollywood development boards. But the fate of this movie-based-on-a-musical-that-was-based-on-a-movie has no doubt been helped by the recent success of Hairspray, fast approaching the $100 million worldwide box office mark.
